Institut Poeta Maragall Barcelona Projecte ERASMUS+ From Diversity to Employability Group+ PIM: an Introduction • We have many ways and different reasons to split the classroms, • PIM, Intensive Improvememt Program is one • For our 11 and 12 years old • We began in 2014. • It was proposed by the Department of Education of the Catalan Government
Institut Poeta Maragall Barcelona Projecte ERASMUS+ From Diversity to Employability Aims • PIM is a preventive action to help students that begin High School without the necessary competences in Maths and Language • To prevent school dropouts before they obtain a degree in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO, at 16 years). • At the end of the process, which lasts two years, the student has to reach the level of the other ones.
Institut Poeta Maragall Barcelona Projecte ERASMUS+ From Diversity to Employability Our project: special traits • No more than 11 students in a PIM class • PIM students have an additional hour for each subject: Maths, Catalan and Spanish • We assign the students by levels by means of reports of the Primary School and a test of basic competences • Students may change groups according to their evolution if the Teaching Team and the family agree
Institut Poeta Maragall Barcelona Projecte ERASMUS+ From Diversity to Employability Working conditions • We have many classes, spaces for splitting • Special teachers for the language classes They are their tutors as well • PIM students are not allowed to score more than 6 (currently AS) unless they pass the same tests of the rest of the group.
Institut Poeta Maragall Barcelona Organization • We have a complex timetable. The fourth extra hour overlaps with the elective subjects, so the PIM students can attend the important subjects • A meeting time for teachers is needed, but the complexity of the schedule does not always allow it Projecte ERASMUS+ From Diversity to Employability

A preventive action to help students that begin High School without the necessary competences in Maths and Language • To prevent school dropouts before they obtain a degree in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO, at 16 years). • What did you learn? After 5 years of experience it is seen as something positive It has changed the attitude of teachers Now we also make these group adaptations for any area or student that is needed.

Teachers can work much better with more homogeneous groups • What went well? The PIM program has greatly increased the academic achievement of our students. Teachers have learned to work with a great diversity of students

To prepare the schedule, the organization We have to work as a team • What didn't you like? At the beginning teachers did not like the idea of working this way, they were not confident about it • What would you change? A meeting time is needed for teachers
