INSTALLING YOUR GLOBE WEATHER STATION GLOBE NY Metro 2008
MATERIALS NEEDED 4 x 4” pressure treated lumber long enough so bottom of weather station mounted on the beam stands 1. 5 m above the top of the bucket Weather shelter 5 gallon bucket 1 bag of readymix cement Rain gauge with mounting bracket and screws 4 Pan or oval head self-tapping screws, 1” long Shovel Your max/min thermometer Your calibration thermometer Screwdriver
STEP 1: Locate position of weather station • Locate away from obstacles • Shelter should face away from the equator (north in our area) • Temperature sensor should be ~1. 5 m above the ground • After set-up, complete the site definition
IDEALLY, the weather station should be a distance from the nearest building that is 4 times the height of the building This is nearly impossible in NYC. So put the weather station where it is easy to visit and describe the location fully in the site definition “Comments” or metadata section
STEP 2: Dig hole wide enough and deep enough for 5 -gallon bucket
STEP 3: Mix cement and water STEP 4: Place 4 x 4 beam upright in bucket and add cement. Hold or prop beam until cement sets. Add rocks to the bottom of the bucket if you wish to minimize amount of cement needed.
STEP 5: Place bucket with post into the hole and fill hole with dirt or more cement. Attach weather shelter Make sure the door faces NORTH
STEP 6: Attach the rain gauge Ideally, the rain gauge should be close to the ground within 4 m of the weather shelter. It can also be mounted on the back of the pole holding the weather shelter. It must be mounted above the top of the shelter and the pole should be cut at an angle as shown
STEP 7: INSTALL THERMOMETER a. Label left probe Air and right probe Soil Attach thermometer to back wall of shelter with screws b. c. Hang air T sensor from nail or hook Air Soil d. Pass right probe through hole at bottom of shelter and bury 10 cm deep in soil
CALIBRATE MAX/MIN THERMOMETER a. Hang calibration thermometer in weather shelter next to maximum/minimum thermometer. b. Complete max/min calibration protocol and send data to GLOBE
STEP 8: Collect data
OPTIONAL INSTALLATION: PVC OR CONDUIT PROTECTION FOR SOIL PROBE WIRE Run the soil probe through a piece of PVC pipe or electric conduit. Bury probe 10 cm in ground Attach pvc/conduit to pole with clamps or straps
