Introducing WHAT IF IT WAS…?

BRAINSTORMING When I started this project I was all over the place in terms of concepts but then, like most of my good ideas, I had a dream and it led me to my final concept. Over the past year my girlfriend and I have dealt with a lot of different things in terms of our relationship and acceptance from family members because of religious views. Those experiences fueled my “Letting In” project from last semester and I want to continue on that path from a different angle, a more controversial one.

CONCEPT FORM I want to make people uncomfortable! There will be a wooden structure in the form of a modern confessional. Behind the confessional is a video of 3 D modeled animated men will be playing, retelling the story of Adam & Eve as Adam & Steve MEANING In today’s society religious groups tend to be the most unaccepting and shurn toward queer people; insisting on letting them know that they’re committing a sin but they often fail to realize that a lot of things are out of context in terms of the bible just because of our time period. Wearing silk and cotton together are a sin but no one will bash that in your face, why? Because homosexuality is viewed as a greater sin. WHY Commentary on conservatism and religion. I chose a confessional because Catholicism is one of the most conservative religion known to man that strongly rejects homosexuality and homosexual unions unlike Hinduism which seems to condone homosexual behavior (Kama Sutra). Basically with this project I want to make viewers uncomfortable and to think about the validity of a man-written and transcribed book.

MATERIALS & BUDGET Wood (based on dimensions of the confessional, need more research on size) Fabric (approx. $2. 79 - 4. 99/yd) Curved Rods (? ) IPAD (FREE) –or- Rear Projection Materials -Frosted Vinyl Shower Curtain (approx. $11. 25) -2 X 4’s for wooden frames (approx. $2. 89 - $7. 20) -Staple Gun (FREE) -Black Duct Tape (FREE) -Utility Knife (FREE) -Saw, Hammer, Nails, Tape Measurer, and other Misc. Tools (FREE) - ¾ inch PVC Pipe + 4 -Way Connectors (approx. $2. 89)

TIMELINE Feb 5 th: Find rigged models Feb 8 th: Begin rigging models Feb 29 th: Maquette of structure built March 11 th: Environment modeled & textured March 26 th: Composited and camera controls March 29 th: Wooden Structure completed April 5 th: Entire Project Completed (hopefully)

FINAL INSTALLATION & SKETCHES Ideally, I would want this installed in an actual church but given the sensitivity of it I doubt any church would be willing to let me do that. So I'm thinking of a space that is heavily populated. I am aware this is somewhat controversial but it wouldn’t be art if it wasn’t.
