Inquiry Based Learning Project
What is Inquiry Based Learning? This form of learning allows students to ponder your own question(s) about a topic that interests you (within some guidelines course!) Ø This type of learning will hopefully provide you with a very meaningful project because you have freedom over the question(s) being asked, the topic, how to present your learning and even some input on how I assess your work. Ø
What Steps are Involved? Ø STEP 1: TOPIC SELECTION l Ø Select a topic. This topic must connect to a development issue either locally or internationally. For example, you could look at a specific aid organization like Doctors Without Borders to see the impact they have on the regions they assist in or perhaps the agricultural methods used to feed people in a specific region of the world. You could look more locally and examine the ongoing debate about development at the nearby Guild Inn grounds. STEP 2: RICH QUESTIONS l Determine the rich question(s) that you will attempt to answer. Rich questions are level 4 questions on the Q-Chart and not ones that are simple yes or no responses.
What Steps are Involved? Ø STEP 3: l l l RESEARCH Conduct research to thoroughly answer your question(s) Research must utilize many different forms of text such as books, reliable websites, encyclopedias, pictures, interviews, tours, museums, textbooks, videos etc. All sources MUST be properly documented in a bibliography. See me if you need help or a template for this!
What Steps are Involved? Ø STEP 4: l l PRESENT YOUR FINDINGS Determine how you will present the answer(s) to your question(s) Please see the suggestions at the end of this presentation!
Other Presentation Ideas Ø Create a children’s book Ø Create a scrap book Ø Create a photo collage Ø A written essay Ø A new and improved textbook chapter Ø Poetry or songs Ø News broadcast or video creation
Assessment Remember…this is a culminating task that will be the product of a couple of weeks of hard work. This must reflect that amount of time and effort. Ø You must provide the criteria for what you are assessed on. For example, if you submit a scrap book, what elements should I see in a professionally done scrapbook? What historical understanding is present? Do you clearly answer your rich questions? Does this connect to grade 8 history? Ø
You are not alone! You will only work on one step at a time…trying to jump too many stairs sometimes results in tripping and falling! Ø I will review and approve each step before moving onto the next phase. Ø I will support you with the supplies you need for your final product (within reason) Ø I will help to guide you to useful sources of information. Ø Please make the most of your class time by arriving on time and prepared. Ø
