What we do: Help people learn and understand what D&I is, why it matters, how it works, and why it is relevant to Duke School of Medicine Key focus areas: • identifying best practices, tools and resources • Resources and recommendations for education and communication strategies for reaching various audiences within the School of Medicine.
How we will communicate • Mix of email with occasional phone conferences • Co-chairs will meet and talk as needed • Clear communication regarding responsibilities • Define beforehand who can take on each project and when it will be completed
Our goals for 2017: • #1 Collect and share personal stories from SOM faculty, staff, and students, sharing what D&I mean to them • #2 Build a D&I related toolkit for various Departments to learn about Diversity and Inclusion, why it’s important, and to offer concrete steps to learn and move forward.
Goal #1: Personal stories sharing why diversity and inclusion are important • What it is: Personal stories (written or video) from staff, faculty, students, etc. sharing why D&I are important to them, or their own experiences how it affected them. Damon Tweedy, MD, for example, could discuss his experiences as a black medical student (or faculty member) here at Duke.
Personal stories • Why it will help: • People connect to personal stories. • Appeals to people already “on board” with D&I as well as people who are new to the field. • Will make participants feel valued and empowered. • Can be shared online internally and externally. • People who may hesitate to interact personally or attend meetings can view at their leisure
Personal stories • Goals: • Short term (2 -3 months): Identify potential candidates, flesh out concept • Medium term (4 -6 months): Conduct first interviews, create prototype story video or article • Long term (8 months-1 year): Create additional content, share completed stories with Duke SOM
Personal stories • Resources Needed: • • Time and energy from working group Willing participants Website/location to host content Video cameras/editing equipment for videos • Measuring Success: # of potential candidates, # of videos/interviews produced, online views or hits • Potential Problems: Getting people to participate, navigating difficult areas (racism within Duke, for example), getting an audience
Goal #2: Building a Toolkit • What it is: Develop resources for departments to use to initiate conversation about diversity and inclusion. Offer ideas and/or activities to engage colleagues and learn about their respective communities to see what may be needed to foster and build their desired environment.
Building a Toolkit • Why it will help: • Many people are interested in making an effort towards D&I but don't know where to start (help ease people’s overwhelming feelings) • Advantages: • Share online throughout Duke for people to use when and as they want to • Lots of materials probably already exist and could be used for free
Building a Toolkit • Goals: • Short term (2 -3 months): Develop 1 -2 resources • Medium term (4 -6 months): Pilot the 1 -2 resources asking for feedback • Long term (8 months-1 year): Develop additional resources, 3 -4
Building a Toolkit • Resources Needed: • Time & effort of members • Program/Curriculum materials • Distribution or platform to share materials • Measuring Success: # of users • Potential Problems: Getting people to use content, and Pairing content down to essentials so people don't become overwhelmed
