today’s line-up… • Data-to-story project check-in • General & specialized databases - demo – Subject headings – Search history, combining searches, citing articles – Getting the full-text • Evaluating resources [handout] • Mid-term exam – due Wed Oct 14 via email
Project Plan – due on Monday • Look at handout for specifics • Turn in a brief narrative that identifies your selected variables and what sort of story-line you intend to pursue • You may include some initial statistics from the GSS but not required • What type of information do you need/want? • Let me know how you will divvy up the work • Turn in one document for the group • Turn in via email or printed document by class-time on Monday
follow-up from last class • new/better suggested resources handout • controlled vocabulary – subject headings – thesaurus | descriptors | index | keyword • allow you to see how your term/concept is identified within the particular database • by using this metadata you can find material that has been identified as really relating to the term (not just a term included in the text)
SEARCH OPERATORS & SYNTAX AND OR NOT Connect your search words together to either narrow or broaden your set of results Combine using parentheses (death or dying) AND grief (woman or female or girl) AND (athlete or sports) * truncation Searches alternate word endings wom* (searches for woman or women) Genetic* (finds genetic, genetics, genetically) “phrases” Searches multiple words as a phrase in that specific order “death and dying”
