Ingegneria per l’Ambiente e il Territorio ► Laurea magistrale internazionale Earth Resources Engineering - ERE Prof. Lisa BORGATTI lisa. borgatti@unibo. it
M. Sc. (Laurea Magistrale) in Environmental Engineering@DICAM UNIBO The Master of Science in Environmental Engineering comprises two different Curricula: • Ingegneria per l’Ambiente ed il Territorio (Italian) • Earth Resources Engineering – ERE (English) You will be awarded the title of “Laureato Magistrale in Ingegneria per l’Ambiente ed il Territorio”. In English: Second Cycle Master in Env. Eng.
Environmental engineering today? “Environmental engineers support the well-being of people and the planet in areas where the two intersect. Over the decades the field has improved countless lives through innovative systems for delivering water, treating waste, and preventing and remediating pollution in air, water, and soil. These achievements are a testament to the multidisciplinary, pragmatic, systems-oriented approach that characterizes environmental engineering. The future holds daunting challenges for human society and our environment. Populations are expanding, demand for resources is increasing, the climate is changing, and humanity’s impacts on the planet continue to mount. The report identifies five pressing challenges of the 21 st century that environmental engineers are uniquely poised to help advance: 1: Sustainably supply food, water, and energy 2: Curb climate change and adapt to its impacts 3: Design a future without pollution and waste 4: Create efficient, healthy, resilient cities 5: Foster informed decisions and action”…

Obtaining Credits - I • Each teaching activity in the ERE curriculum is classified by name and type (compulsory/elective – normal course / laboratory) and number of CFU (“credits” – ECTS) • In ordinary courses, a final exam is foreseen • You have at least 6 possibilities each year to pass the exam • Each professor defines the rules for passing and the type of exam (some professors may ask you to take tests or complete homework or develop reports during the course) • Each professor defines the dates of the exams
Obtaining Credits - II • In ordinary courses you obtain a grade between 18 and 30 (honors are possible) if you pass • In laboratory courses you usually obtain a pass / fail grade • The successful grades are averaged over credits. Only successful grades are considered in CGPA Cumulative Grade Point Average CGPA= Σ (G * ECTSV) /ΣECTSV G: Grade awarded; ECTSV: credits awarded for the course • The weighed average is important since it defines the grade of your final graduation and it is used to rank students when applying for grants • There is no direct correspondence among Italian graduation system and other graduation systems, see https: //www. unibo. it/en/teaching/enrolment -transfer-and-final-examination/the-university-system/ects-label
Electives • Each year you have two “time windows” during which you are allowed changing the electives and the study plan (mid October –mid November and mid February –mid March) • NO CHANGES ARE ALLOWED OUTSIDE THE TIME WINDOWS • A list of “suggested” electives is available on the ERE website • Electives outside the list may be selected, but the board of studies must approve them • Electives need to be carefully selected considering the term • Check the timetable of lessons before taking electives
Electives https: //corsi. unibo. it/2 cycle/Environmental. Engineering-ERE/70002 -environmentalengineering-research-a
Research Projects A and B • Research Project A is a training activity (internal to the university or external – for non-EU students limitations may apply to external training) • An academic tutor should be selected by the student for the activity (or assigned by the Director of Studies Do. S). The proposed activity (title and tutor) need to be submitted for approval to the Do. S • Research Project A is fulfilled when the student has performed 150 hours, as certified by the tutor who has also to approve a report (10 -20 pages usually) • To obtain the credits, you should send to the Director of Studies the final report and the tutor should address to the Do. S a letter of approval
Research Projects A and B • Research Project B allows for the activity required to write the graduation thesis (at least 300 hours) • The activity may be internal or external, in Italy or abroad, e. g. in Erasmus partner universities (non-EU residents may have limitations due to immigration visa) • An academic tutor should be selected by the student for the activity (or assigned by the Director of Studies - Do. S if preferred) • Research Project B is fulfilled when the student has prepared a graduation thesis approved by the tutor • To obtain the credits, you should defend thesis on due dates -see website of the course
Research Projects A and B: • may be completely separated activities • may be integrated activities • suggestion: integrate the activities in a single project aimed at the preparation of the graduation thesis • even if you plan to carry out the activities in different contexts (e. g. RPA in Bologna and RPB abroad) if you select the same university tutor you may be able to carry out a preliminary activity here and to be more prepared for Research Project B.
Electives • When changing the study plan (e. g. changing electives) specific limitations apply to the first date when you will be allowed recording the grade • FOR EXAMPLE, if in October (Y) you select an elective that runs in the second term, the first available date for recording the grade will be June (+1). Remember this if you feel you are changing your mind!
Graduation and CGPA • Graduation certificate reports a final grade, not CGPA • Final grade is expressed as G/110 • 110/110 and honors is the maximum final grade awarded • Final grade is obtained as follows FG= CGPA* (110/30) + DG DG: grade obtained for the defense (0 -7) • Honors are only possible if FG≥ 113
Language activities • Language courses (English and Italian) are available. Check with Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (CLA) • Non-Italian students are invited to attend the ltalian Language and Culture Lab

Erasmus Plus and Overseas • Specific mobility grants are available to spend periods abroad by the Erasmus plus and Overseas programs • Specific calls for applications will be issued (usually between December and January) • The application is complex – be prepared!! • Information on the ERE website (still to be published) and by the reference person of single exchange programs • Erasmus mobility may be for a semester or for the graduation thesis project only • Suggestion: consider second year / second semester for mobility abroad
Erasmus Plus and Overseas Deadlines for applications: • Erasmus+ deadline in February each year to leave Sept Y -July Y+1 -Only for specific destinations • Erasmus+ placement deadline in April each year to leave Sept Y July Y+1 -Only for Internship • Plan well in advance considering when you need to apply
