INFRASOUND BY: NAM-Y 8
BASIC FACTS • Infrasound is a type of sound (obviously). • It is referred to sound that has a frequency of less than 20 Hertz (Hz). That means when we graph it, it is not going to have many cycles per second. • Humans cannot usually hear infrasound. • Infrasound can be detected by a microphone. • As with anything, there are many uses for infrasound.
USES • Volcanic eruptions can be detected using infrasound. This is because a volcanic eruption releases infrasound. • The traveling of meteors in space can be detected by infrasound. • Baleen whales use infrasound to communicate with each other. The same goes with African elephants. • Infrasound’s uses are also used in weather.
ADVANTAGES • As said, advantages of infrasound are that many animals use infrasound to communicate with each other. • Elephants can use infrasound to escape from poachers’ vehicles since they will be aware of the coming sound. • Infrasound can travel in very long distances.
DISADVANTAGES • A disadvantage of infrasound is that it can be dangerous to human health if exposed a lot to it. • There have been complaints about people getting depressed or nauseous when exposed to infrasound. • When some people hear infrasound, they believe that supernatural or odd events are taking place.
