Aims of the workshop An opportunity for you to: ¡ Discuss the Panel’s information-sharing statement, which has been designed for practitioners in all custodial settings to communicate the importance of sharing information about detainees to manage risks of self harm and suicide. ¡ Identify any recurring themes about information sharing problems across the custodial sectors as well as within organisations. ¡ Discuss risks relating to the transfer of detainees between settings and how information flows support this.

Information sharing statement ¡ Recommendations from coroners Rule 43 Reports revealed that, of the 180 reports and verdicts collated, concerns about the effectiveness of information exchange mentioned in approximately 70 cases. ¡ The Panel has focussed on improving the flow of information relating to detainees’ risk of selfharm / suicide and their healthcare records. ¡ Stakeholder responses to the IAP’s consultation on information sharing revealed misunderstandings about data protection and the concept of medical confidentiality unnecessarily inhibits staff from sharing relevant information to manage detainees’ risks of self harm and/or suicide. ¡ An information sharing statement has been developed to summarise clearly for custodial staff how and why they need to share information. ¡ Statement endorsed by Information Commissioner and Ministerial Board on Deaths in Custody. IAP seeking similar endorsement from General Medical Council. ¡ Panel will work with the custodial sectors to identify how to communicate the statement and embed it in practice. ¡ Next steps l l Monitoring the impact Evaluating the impact
