What is Information Literacy? • Information literacy is a crucial skill in the pursuit of knowledge. • It involves recognizing when information is needed and… • • Being able to efficiently locate Accurately evaluate Effectively use, and Clearly communicate information in various formats.
Why is Information Literacy important? • We live in the Information Age, and "information" is increasing at a rapid pace. • Just because so much information is so easily and quickly available does not mean that all of it is worthwhile or even true. • Because of resources like the Internet, finding high-quality information is now harder than ever, not easier!
What is E-Learning? • “Electronic-Learning” • A learning system based on formalized teaching but with the help of electronic resources • The use of computers and the Internet forms the major component of E-learning. • Embodies differentiated instruction
Why is E-Learning important? • It teaches digital literacy. • Allows for a mobile learning environment • Students learn not to rely on the teacher, but to be accountable themselves, and become independent!
Good vs. Bad sources Good Sources • • • Author is listed The purpose is clear Site is well-designed and stable Information is current Content is accurate & reliable/lists sources Bad Sources • No author is listed • The purpose is unclear • Site is not easily usable (ads, links don’t work, etc. ) • Information is outdated • Content is inaccurate, doesn’t list any sources. • Bad spelling and grammar • Information is biased.
Domain Names • The domain name is the part of the URL that identifies it as a part of a particular domain. • For example, www. google. com Network address Domain name

These sites have potential to be unreliable, so tread carefully • . org: This domain is owned by a non-profit organization. These sites tend to have more reliable information • . net: This domain is owned by an Internet Service Provider. These sites also have potential to be unreliable. • . edu: This domain is owned by an educational institution, like a school or a university. These sites tend to be more reliable. • . gov: This domain is owned by the government. These sites tend to have the most reliable information.
Search Engines • A search engine is, “a computer program that searches documents, especially on the World Wide Web, for a specified word or words and provides a list of documents in which they are found”. • The most common search engine people use is Google.
