Informal Commands WALK! SLEEP! EAT!
In Spanish… • When we want to tell a friend to do something we use informal (tú) commands… • ¡Come! – EAT! • ¡Camina!- WALK! • ¡Duerme!- SLEEP! What looks familiar about these endings?
Positive Commands • Lets begin with the do’s (positive tú commands) To state the do’s of regular or stem-changing verbs: (1) Start with the “tú” form in the present tense (2) drop the –s ending off the “tú” form of the verb. (3) Add ¡ ! To the beginning and end STATEMENT COMMAND (tú) hablas ¡habla! Talk! (tú) comes ¡Come! Eat! (tú) duermes ¡Duerme! Sleep!
Let’s work on positive commands… • Open the window!… – Verb Abrir • Put it in the tú form = tú abres • Drop the –s = abre ¡Abre la ventana!

Pronouns with + tú Commands • If there is a pronoun: – Put the junk in the trunk: attatch it to the command • ¡Come la manzana! ¡Cómela! – When a command is more than two syllables, we change the spelling and the sound when we attach the pronoun. So add an accent to third syllable from the end. • ¡Ponlo! ¡Límpiala! ¡Pásala! ¡Hazlo!
Negative Tú Commands • To state the don’ts- negative (tú) commands To form: (1) Start with the “yo” form in the present tense: bailo (2) Drop the “o” bail (3) Add opposite “tú” from endings bailes (1) Switch the –as ending to –es (2) Switch the –es endings to –as (4) Add “No” in front of the command No bailes (5) Add ¡ ! In the front and the back ¡No bailes! STATEMENT COMMAND (yo) tomo ¡No tomes! Don’t drink (yo) corro ¡No corras! Don’t run! (yo) duermo ¡No duermas! Don’t sleep! (yo) hago ¡No hagas! Don’t make

Irregular - commands • Totally Irregular: – Ir - ¡ No vayas! - Don’t go! – Ser- ¡ No seas!- Don’t be! – Estar- ¡No estes!- Don’t be! • Irregular Yo: If it’s irregular in the present tense, it will be irregular in negative commands – Stem changers: • Dormir - duermo- ¡No duermas! • Pedir- pido- ¡No pidas! • Cerrar- cierro- ¡No cierras! – Go Verbs: • Hacer - hago - ¡No hagas! • Tener- tengo - ¡ No tengas!
-gar, -car, and -zar verbs There are several verbs that change spelling when made into negative commands to keep their sound… 1. Verbs ending in -gar like: 1. Jugar- ¡No juegues! - g changes to gue to keep the hard g sound 2. Verbs ending in –car like Practicar - ¡No practiques! -c changes to a que to keep the hard k sound 3. Verbs ending in -zar like: empezar - ¡No empieces! - z changes to ce to keep the hard s sound
Prouns with negative “tú” commands • Place the pronoun before the command (or conjugated verb) and after the “NO” Ejemplo: Don’t eat them! (las papas fritas) ¡ No las comas! Don’t read it! (el libro) ¡No lo leas!
Let’s work on negative commands… Don’t arrive late! ¡No llegues tarde! Don’t touch the piano! -Verb tocar in tú form = tocas -Change –as to –es and remember the spelling change!= toques ¡No toques el piano!
