Giambattista Bodoni • An Italian typographer, printer, type-designer, compositor and publisher in Parma. • He was born February 16 th, 1740 (Saluzzo, Italy)-November 29 th, 1813(Parma, Italy)
Notable Achievements • Unprecedented levels of technical refinement. • Known for designs of pseudo classical typefaces. (typeface/layout) • Personally engraved 298 typefaces and various printing, making roughly 1200 fine editions.
• Along with Firmin Didot, he developed “New Face Type”. • Had a passion for the contrast between thick and thin lines.

Biography • Born and raised in Italy. • Known for numerous trades and techniques; typographer, type-designer, compositor, printer, and publisher in Parma. • Father and Grandfather were in the printmaking business before. • First real succes was the organizing of la Stamperia Reale • After much succes, was permitted to make his own printing house, called Officina Bodoni.
• Appointed by Minister Guillame du Tillot to teach students in the art of printing and typemaking. • The Amoretti Brothers proved to be his best pupils until 1791, eventually leaving after numerous arguments to establish their own typefoundry. • His highly stylized editions were considered by some more apt “to be admired for typeface and layout, not to be studied or read. ” • His printing reflected aesthetic of plain, unadorned style, combined with purity of materials. • Bodoni’s contribution is found repeatedly in contemporary titling. Many use it in labels, written works or typeface inspired by Bodoni.
