Parents Influences on Gender Roles http: //gozips. uakron. edu/~susan 8/PARINF. HTM The attitudes and behaviors that make up gender roles tend to begin to develop in the home. This tends to be the strongest influence in a child’s life, and the place at which parents pass on their ideas of gender role to their offspring. This type of socialization includes treating male and females differently. Putting gender specific clothing, and colors on children, and giving them gender specific toys to show them the parents gender expectations. One example is giving girls a play house with dishes and food to help get them ready to be a homemaker.

Peer Influence on Gender Roles http: //www. apa. org/monitor/julaug 01/peerplay. aspx According to a study children of preschool age tend to self segregate into different gender groups. This tends to lead them into preferences, social skills, and styles. After this segregation it can be harder for them to relate with the opposite sex, which in turn actually exacerbates the gender divide and differences. This is the reason why some think more exposure to intergender groups can help alleviate some of the biased gender expectations and norms.

Media influences on Gender Roles http: //krytyka. org/gender-stereotypes-in-mass-media-case-studyanalysis-of-the-gender-stereotyping-phenomenon-in-tvcommercials/ Media has a significant influence on the Gender roles of kids and teens. Media is literally everywhere all the time, especially now that we all have smart phones that are always in our hand. The media portrays typical gender stereotypes that influence people to have certain beliefs and behaviors to mimic what they see in the media. There are many negative social problems that come from media especially when it comes to the gender norms of Females. Representing women as a size 0 with DD Breasts that look like super models can create harmful body shaming stereotypes for women. Not only body image but the sexualization of women in the media has caused issue with rape culture. These stereotypes could be the result of a male dominated media, and a representation of how the majority of men see women. https: //www. statista. com/statistics/625783/news-mediagender-distribution-by-topic/

Educations influence on Gender Roles http: //www. edchange. org/multicultural/papers/genderbias. ht ml According to this article boys and girls are treated differently in school, with girls being treated unfairly. Traditionally teachers have focused more on boys because they are typically the provider of most households. This seems to be thinking that teachers, and education in general are steering boys towards the higher paying math, science and engineering degree’s of today’s workforce. This is seen as a problem by many in today’s society as unfair and unequal treatment to women and girls. https: //www. statista. com/statistics/240141/us-doctorate-recipients-by-gender-and-field-ofstudy/

Conclusion There are many different things that influence our Gender Roles. These gender roles are changing, and will continue to change probably until they don’t exist. There are definitely some gender based stereotypes that have caused serious societal issues, but as a whole I think we are moving in a good direction. As with all things change takes time, especially when it comes to peoples beliefs and understandings of the world as they know it. From my grandmothers generation to mine, there already tremendous differences that have taken place, and I can only imagine things that my daughter will be able to accomplish in her life time growing up a few generations later.
