Inflector installation intro talk Chris Polly – Fermilab Inflector Installation Review 1 August 2018
Primary motivation…muon flux • Need to increase flux by x 2 to be in line with TDR and meet goal of 21 x BNL in FY 19/20 running • The new inflector is the largest ‘known’ way to substantially increase the flux Gain 1. 40 Installation of new open-ended inflector 1. 20 Installation of momentum-collimating wedges (cooling) in beamline 1. 1 -1. 2 Higher kicker voltages 1. 1 More reliable operation of electrostatic quads at higher voltage 1. 05 Installation of 2 faster-switching PS in upstream beamline 2. 03 2 Cause 8/1/2018 TOTAL Product
Some updates since the last review • Off to a slow start… 1 -2 weeks behind due to – Inefficiencies from everybody disappearing to collab meeting two weeks ago + after run/meeting vacations last week – Cryo operations issues last week and this week diverted attention – Deferring this review • Have decided not to attempt to install angular adjustment capabilities in this shutdown – Consulted with BNL engineers who changed design from pivot to current design for added flexibility – Not enough time to carefully engineer a new solution, which in any scenario would add risk – Installation *should* be straight forward without this change since we are simply remounting a new inflector that is contained in a shell that was previously installed in the chamber 3 8/1/2018
Schedule for today • Start with some technical talks… – Status of the new inflector cold mass construction (Karie) – Procedure for swapping old for new inflector (Hogan) – Instrumentation and commissioning plans (Karie) • Overall schedule and resource issues discussion to follow • 12: 00 -12: 30 adding a closed executive committee session • Need to find a time that works best to give a tour – Plan to go over to MC-1 to get a better understanding of the tasks and the work areas (2: 30 -3: 00 bad for me, but not a strong constraint) – Could also go see the new inflector, but not much to see beyond the pictures already in Karie’s talk 4 8/1/2018
