Understanding the Industrial Revolution Industrialization simply means Machine Production, or using machines to produce goods. The rise of factories dominates life in industrial nations. Massive influx of people moved (or are moved) from rural areas to cities.
Fueling Industrialization Coal is the dominant fuel source for the Industrial Revolution. Water wheels also were also important. Previous production was largely fueled by wood.
Steam Engine 1781 James Watts develops the modern steam engine. Steam engine is able to provide vast sums of power not previously available. Creates a host of new inventions: Train Steam Ship Pumping Engines Industrial machinery
Industry and Production Vast new factories come online in the early 19 th century, producing goods in huge quantities: Textiles Steel Cement Machine Tools
Positive Effects of Industrialization New technologies are developed. New jobs are created. Immigration from rural areas into the cities. High quality goods are made at low prices.
Negative Effects of Industrialization causes pollution. Cities are very unhealthy. Industrialization causes mass poverty. Living conditions are very poor. Child labor is widespread and exploitative. Corruption is widespread. Wealthy industrialists are able to dominate the country’s political and economic systems.
Taylorism, or Scientific Management Production process should be divided into specialized tasks. Each task speeds up production. Train all workers to do unskilled jobs. The goal is to “Makes workers interchangeable”
