Cover email advice Your covering email or letter is your personal sales pitch where you introduce yourself, explain why you want the job and why you would be a good candidate for the role. There are five components to your framework. Introduction: Who you are, what you are applying for and when you are available to work Motivation and your preferences: What is your motivation for applying? Show your understanding of the role. What makes you stand out from everyone else? What can you offer the company? Why you are attracted to them: What areas of their business interests you? What makes them stand out from other similar companies? Show them that you have taken the time to understand the company. Why they should be attracted to you: Highlight relevant experience or skills that match the job description. What is the next step: How can they contact you? When will you be available to work? Keep your document professional and avoid sending out a generic letter. Even a speculative letter should have specific details relating to the company you are applying to. If you've addressed your letter to a named person, 'Yours sincerely' is the correct sign-off. If you don't have a contact name, you should sign off with 'Yours faithfully'. http: //placements. eng. cam. ac. uk

Responding to a job advert We design, develop and manufacture our own electro-mechanical sensors, as well as carrying out some contract R&D work. This includes development of the electronics, firmware, software and mechanical designs. All placement work will be on currently active projects and will result in exposure to a range of engineering disciplines (electronics, mechanical, software, control and instrumentation, test, R&D and application engineering); this might be useful to a student who hasn’t quite decided which engineering field to specialise in yet and is also particularly attractive to someone wishing to go on to work in a multi-disciplinary R&D environment. There is likely to be one main project for the placement plus several smaller activities, and both team and individual working will be required. A mentor will be nominated to oversee and assist, but self-motivation and liaison with staff across the company will be expected. An enquiring mind, general enthusiasm and a “can do” attitude will be a big help – all of which should be natural to a CUED student! http: //placements. eng. cam. ac. uk
