Individual Investigation The Individual Investigation (50% of your GCSE) The Individual Investigation is much like a science investigation because you come up with a question (hypothesis) to answer. College/University students are expected to produce detailed essays which are very much like an investigation Investigations should be: • 1, 000 – 2, 000 words in length • word processed • well researched • include a variety of graphs, images, statistical tables, diagrams and drawings • include analysis of data • reach a conclusion

Individual Investigation Firstly choosing a suitable Individual Investigation title is a very important step, you need to consider it carefully. The title can be based on: • A topic arising from one of your subject options • An area of personal interest • Links to a future career Your title needs to be a question or hypothesis. Someone interested in rugby might write a project which explores: Title: Should rugby protective gear be made compulsory for under 18 s? Someone interested in a career within Pre School might write a project which explores: Title: Is pre-school Welsh provision a growing trend? Someone interested in a career within motor vehicles might write a project which explores: Title: Are electric cars environmentally friendly?

Individual Investigation You could be creative in how you title your project. The introduction, aims and objectives would address the clear intent and focus of the project, for example: 1. Energy or Green energy? This would be an investigation which researches the pros and cons of future energy in Wales- should we be considering non- renewable energy (nuclear) or sustainable energy (tidal) 2. Is being social making us more antisocial? This could be a project on the use of social media for cyber-bullying, comparing the problems faced in Wales and other region. Alternatively, it could be a project on how teenager’s social skills are being affected as a result of the age of social media. 3. To what extent does Instagram affect teenagers mental health? This is an open ended question which will allow you to get a good discussion.

Individual Investigation Things to think about • Choose a title which focuses on a topic that you are interested in. • Use a simple and straightforward title. • Choose a title and topic you already know something about. It is useful to have some knowledge about the topic before you start. • Choose a topic and title you know you will be able to find enough information about. • Be confident you will be able to find good sources of information.
