INDIRECT QUESTIONS(PRESENTE SIMPLE) We use indirect questions to be more polite. ( Usamos las preguntas indirectas para ser mas amable). Rather than asking a question directly, we make the question softer and more polite. ( En lugar de hacer una pregunta directamente podemos hacerla de una forma mas suave y cortés) Example: Think about a person who wants to ask the time in the street. Which way sounds more polite? ( Piensa en una persona que quiere saber qué hora es. Cúal pregunta sería mas cortés) A) What the time is it? ¿ Qué hora es ? O B) Can you tell me what time it is? ¿ Me podrías decir que hora es ?

INDIRECT QUESTIONS • Yes-No Questions Yes-No questions do not have a question word (what, how, when etc. ) Therefore, we need an extra word to use in order to change a direct question into an indirect question. We can use ‘whether’ or ‘if’. After the question part, we use the sentence order. Direct Question: Is Mr. Smith available for a meeting now? Sentence Order: Mr. Smith is available for a meeting now. Indirect Question: Excuse me, do you know if/whether Mr. Smith is available for a meeting now?

INDIRECT QUESTIONS • How old are you? ¿Cuántos años tienes? La pregunta indirecta sería: Could you tell me , how old you are. Me podrías decir cuántos años tienes • Las preguntas indirectas están formadas por una oración compleja, es decir una oración principal más una oración subordinada. “Could you tell me " es la oración principal y "how old you( SUJETO) are ( VERBO) " es la oración subordinada. • El verbo en la oración subordinada se coloca después del sujeto, es decir que la inversión del sujeto y del verbo de las oraciones interrogativas directas no se produce en las oraciones interrogativas indirectas.

En preguntas con wh, cuando hay preguntas en presente simple que tienen do or does como auxiliar se elimina en la pregunta indirecta y el verbo te queda en presente simple en este caso al verbo se le agrega ”s” porque se habla de una tercera persona singular. Could you tell me if he lives in Paris ( En preguntas cortas de yes/no questions agregamos “if” que significa “sí” para poder formar la pregunta) ¿Me puedes decir sí vive en Paris? Is she hungry?
