Indirect Object Pronouns
What is it? • The indirect object (IO) tells us where the direct object (DO) is going. We use it any time we want to express that someone is receiving something. • Sentences that have an indirect object usually also have a direct object. • It answers the question “To whom? ” or “For whom? ” the action of the verb is performed. He gives the book to Maria. /He gives Maria the book. DO= the book To whom? /IO= Maria He buys the flowers for me. /He buys me flowers. DO= flowers To whom? /IOP= me
How do I find the IO? • To identify the indirect object use our two guidelines: 1. The IO tells us who is receiving the DO. 2. The IO answers the question “to whom? ” or “for whom” the action of the verb is performed.
What are the pronouns? • An indirect object pronoun must always be used when someone is getting something. It must have the following pronouns: me (to me) nos (to us) te (to you-familiar) le (to him, her, you-formal) les (to them, to you-all) • Where do we put it? BEFORE the conjugated verb!
Careful with le(s) • Le= to him, to her, to you (formal) Ella le escribe una carta. She writes him a letter. She writes her a letter. She writes you (formal) a letter. • Les= to them (m), to them (f), to you all Ella les escribe una carta. She writes them a letter. She writes you-all a letter.
To avoid ambiguity, add a prep phrase (a + person)! – Ella le escribe una carta a Juan. – Ella le escribe una carta a su hermana. – Ella le escribe una carta a usted. – Ella les escribe una carta a sus padres. – Ella les escribe una carta a ustedes.
