Expression of interest “We are interested in getting involved with β=0. 8 elliptical cavities and cryomodule Research, Design and Development for Project-X. ” Indian Accelerator laboratories are developing similar accelerators. Indian Accelerator Laboratories (RRCAT, BARC) have experience in design, prototyping, fabrication and testing of some accelerator components for the Indian accelerator programs and CERN (LHC and CLIC-TF). Indian Accelerator laboratories and Industries would jointly work towards the development of accelerator components for Project-X and Indian High Intensity Proton Accelerator Programs, in close collaboration with Fermilab. 11/21/2008 Fermilab Project-X Collaboration Meeting 3

Indian Accelerator Laboratories • Several Indian accelerator laboratories are in operation today – – RRCAT, Indore BARC and TIFR, Mumbai IUAC, Delhi VECC, Kolkota • India collaborates in the field of accelerators with Fermilab and CERN. – India is a CERN observer member state. – Indian Laboratories (RRCAT, BARC, IUAC) are members of TTC. • India has plans in place to develop modern Superconducting Radio Frequency accelerator for basic & applied research and nuclear energy production. – Radioactive Ion Beam Facility – Spallation Neutron Source – High Intensity Proton Linac for Accelerator Driven Sub-critical Reactor 11/21/2008 Fermilab Project-X Collaboration Meeting 4

Cavity and Cryomodule Development • In collaboration with Fermilab Indian laboratories are developing b = 1 ILC Cavity and Cryomodule components. – Cavity: • Cavity design studies • Development of forming tooling, • Development of e-beam welding fixtures, • Cavity forming, trimming, frequency measurement, e-beam welding, tuning • Fabrication of 1 -cell cavity using Al, Copper, Nb (in progress) • Machining of part of end group from solid Nb block. – Tuner: Two new tuner designs (BARC/RRCAT) and prototype – Cryomodule: • Participating in Type-IV design development at Fermilab • Design for manufacturing and value engineering 11/21/2008 Fermilab Project-X Collaboration Meeting 7

New Facilities Planned under Domestic SCRF Cavity Development • Setting up of infrastructure for SCRF cavity Fabrication (120 Ton Hydraulic Press, Nb Machining Facility, EBW Machine etc. ), • Cavity processing facilities ( EP/BCP/BP, HPR & Annealing Furnaces), • Assembly & testing set up. (Clean-room, Test cryostats, RF sources etc. ), • Add to cryogenic infrastructure, (Bigger Liquid He Plant, Liquid N 2 Plant and Accessories for Larger Cryogen & Gas Handling Systems etc. ), • Augment experimental facilities for superconducting materials research. Fermilab’s Proposal: Project-X and SRF Infrastructure • Accelerator Components – Indian design and fabrication of the beta = 0. 8 Cavity and Cryomodule, in collaboration with Fermilab • • Cavity components He Vessel (except bellow) Tuner Cryomodule components (Mostly cryogenic pipes, insulation, stands etc. ) to be assembled at Fermilab • Superconducting Radio Frequency Infrastructure – – 11/21/2008 Vertical Test Stand Cryogenic Vessel Horizontal Test Stand Cryogenic Vessel Design and Fabrication of a Cryomodule Test Stand components Fermilab will work with RRCAT by sharing information, in developing RRCAT’s cavity processing and Testing facility Fermilab Project-X Collaboration Meeting 12

β=0. 8 Cavity package Development • Indian laboratories in collaboration with Fermilab proposed to contribute to both the design studies as well as fabrication of β=0. 8 cavities. • While we are developing Indian SRF infrastructure we would propose to use the – FNAL facilities to evaluate prototype • Helium vessel components – Machining of components for Helium vessel (Except bellow) • Development of the Indian design of tuner for β=0. 8 cavity – At present we have two designs under prototype and room temperature testing 11/21/2008 Fermilab Project-X Collaboration Meeting 13

β=0. 8 Cryomodule Development • Building on our understanding of the TYPE-IV ILC cryomodule design we will collaborate with Fermilab in the development of the β=0. 8 cryomodule design and fabrication. • We propose to include the RRCAT developed new design concepts – – – • Cavity support system, 2 K Helium supply line simplification, Pipe sizing. Multi-layer insulation improvements We propose to undertake these developments in steps by doing development of subsystems 1. Fabricate a scaled down cavity support system, 2. Start designing SS helium vessel, 3. A shorter cryomodule to house a couple of cavities, • We would gradually take up other subsystems. 1. SRF Infrastructure Development • Indian laboratories are in process of designing SRF infrastructure for cavity fabrication, processing, testing and cryomodule fabrication for Indian High Intensity Proton Accelerator. • The β=0. 8 cavity and cryomodule program for Project-X will use these facilities in India. • We will collaborate with Fermilab in jointly developing these facilities at the Indian laboratories and at Fermilab. • All of these collaborative activities would require exchange of technical manpower between FNAL and Indian laboratories for participation in design, testing, system development, etc. 11/21/2008 Fermilab Project-X Collaboration Meeting 15

Summary • We are interested in getting involved with β=0. 8 elliptical cavities for Project X, • Indian laboratories have the capabilities for design & component manufacturing. • Interest in exchange of trained technical man-power for system development and qualification, • RRCAT has made some progress in the development of 1. 3 GHz β =1 cavity forming & welding and cryomodule systems studies, • RRCAT is engaged in setting up SCRF infrastructure for its domestic program through inter-laboratory-industries collaboration, • Focus on Synergetic approach to benefit domestic program & international collaboration. 11/21/2008 Fermilab Project-X Collaboration Meeting 16
