The Coastal Plains of India ❖ The Indian coastline which is 7516. 6 km long covers 6100 km of mainland coastline along with the Andaman, Nicobar and the Lakshadweep islands. ❖ The coastline of India touches 13 states and Union Territories. ❖ The western coastal plains are along the Arabian Sea whereas the eastern coastal plains are located along the Bay of Bengal.

The Eastern Coastal Plains ➢ Stretches from West Bengal to Tamil Nadu and pass through Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. ➢ Washed by the Bay of Bengal. ➢ Width of 50 to 60 km. ➢ Large rivers make wide deltas. ➢ Low rainfall. The Western Coastal Plains ➢ Stretches from Kerala to Gujarat, passing through Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. ➢ Washed by the Arabian Sea. ➢ Width differs from 80 to 100 km. ➢ Small rivers make no deltas. ➢ High rainfall.
Features of the Eastern Coastal Plains ➔ Long stretch of land that lies between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal. ➔ The major rivers which pass through this region have carved out broad valleys and deltas. ➔ The rainfall varies from a high of above 3, 000 mm to a low of 1, 000 mm.
Features of the Western Coastal Plains ➔ Long stretch of land that lies between Western Ghats and Arabian Sea. ➔ Small rivers pass through this region and no deltas are present. ➔ Rainfall: 2, 000 and 3, 000 mm of rainfall annually.
