India Seeks Self Rule Call for Independence After World War I, Britain promised Indians greater self-government. They received only minor reforms instead. After a massacre in the city of Amritsar, the Congress Party in India called for full independence.

Gandhi and the Salt March Gandhi took a stand against the rule that Indians buy only British salt. March 12, 1930, Gandhi led a 240 mile march to the sea with 78 followers. By the time they reached the sea, thousands were present.
