Incorporating Quotations: *You must blend quotations from the texts with your words, forming a complete sentence.
Example 1: l Armstrong includes humor in his tale as he reveals that his clean-shaven legs might be why “trucks are always trying to run [him] over; they see [his] sissy-boy calves and decide not to brake” (Armstrong and Jenkins 6).
Example 2: l One person mentioned her indignity about taxpayer money being “given to someone with a 750, 000 mortgage to pay who needs a set of fresh, matching towels in her bathroom every season” (Ripley 14).
The expectation l l Notice that you cannot “hear” the quotation in either of the examples? That is the goal. Observe the use of brackets to replace words that had the wrong verb form or pronoun. You may also use ellipses (…) to shorten the quote where needed. Use correct parenthetical citation and punctuation.
What to do & not do l l Use quotations to support your ideas; do not use them in place of your ideas. Avoid long quotations and stringing quotations together. The essay should be 75% or more YOUR words, 25% or less others’ words (quotations)
Sample Paragraph The idea of assigning a value to human life is controversial – some people get queasy about the idea, while others get angry. In fact, one person mentioned her indignity about taxpayer money being “given to someone with a 750, 000 mortgage to pay who needs a set of fresh, matching towels in her bathroom every season” (Ripley 14). Although this is likely an exaggeration, this anonymous statement reveals the perspective of a number of people who feel that the charity donations should have been enough. Some think that we cannot and should not pay anything to the victims of 9/11, nor any other disaster. Others, however, feel that the government isn’t giving enough money to the victims’ families. In one case a woman says that she “just can’t accept the fact that the Federal Government is saying my husband brother are worth nothing” (Ripley 12). While the government can never replace the loss of a loved one, such emotional appeals make it difficult to understand how it can so callously seem to value one life over another. There doesn’t seem to be any one right answer to this emotionally charged topic.
Now you try it! l l l I will give you some sample quotations. Integrate (blend) the quotations with your own words – you may integrate the entire quotation or use parts of it. Be sure to also add appropriate commentary. Make sure that you have a complete sentence once you’ve integrated the quotation. Punctuate properly, including correct parenthetical citations.
