Model Building Blocks Many architects plan buildings around a few basic forms-- the triangle, cylinder, cone, and sphere, as well as the rectangular prism/box.

Planning Things to consider: 1. Type of model 2. Model’s purpose 3. Presentation Delivery Method 4. Scale 5. Materials and Tools 6. Order of work 7. Needed materials

All about Scale Available space: – How portable does the model need to be? – Does it need to be transported long distances and will cost to ship be an issue? – How much detail needs to be viewed?

Stage 1: The Base Contours-Polyurethane Foam Bases for All Types of Models www. Architectual-models. com

Stage 2: The Solid Pieces • • Plan and layout the model components Provide Material texturing and detailing Cut and Assemble Structural Members Attach structure to base Student Work – University of Florida

Hints and Tricks - 1 • Be sure all cutting tools are sharp • Use adhesives with low water content so that they dry quickly • Use fine grit sandpaper (works best) Emery boards or nail files work great also. Professional Development Lesson ID Code: 8001

Hints and Tricks – Joining Edges 1. Clean edge surfaces 2. Rough edges to be joined with sandpaper 3. Degrease edges, if necessary, with acetone or rubbing alcohol 4. Allow edges to dry 5. Apply thin even layer of adhesive 6. Read and follow directions on wait time 7. Join the two edges using straight pins or small pieces of tape until permanently fixed
