Dr. Smith (2013), a renowned behavioral scientist stated “people are just straight up cray, dude” (p. 231). Use the author’s last name and the year it was published. If the page number is available, include that at the end of the citation. You can put the date citation after the name of the author when you intro the quote, then place the page number at the end. In the documentary Blackfish, a Seaworld trainer went on record to say “sometimes I get hungry and eat the fish” (Cowperthwaite et al, 2015). Use the phrase “et. al” for whenever you have three or more authors. Then only write the first author’s name.

If no author is available, put the name of the article/website and the date it was published. If available, include the page number. If no author and no date are available, put the title of the source and “n. d. ” to show no date was available.

A good rule of thumb… One of my past college instructors had some good advice on in-text citations. She provided a good rule of thumb when posting or writing a paper: when reading a sentence if the reader can ask the question "Who says? ", it needs a citation. Ex: George Washington was the first President of the United States − that's common knowledge and does not require a citation. Ex: Poodles are friendlier than Dalmatians. Who says? Therefore, it needs a citation to support the statement.
