SECTION 2: “PERSONS UNKNOWN” This section is appropriately titled, “Persons Unknown. ” The majority of this section focused on finding who killed the Clutter family. Let’s Summarize. Someone give the class a brief overview of what we read.
“PERSONS UNKNOWN” The investigators had little evidence and almost no leads, If you had been in their shoes, where would you have started? Why? (Think of the specific evidence they found)
“PERSONS UNKNOWN” The Clutter family was considered to be as close to perfect as families could get. As the investigators began their search for answers, they started getting phone calls and letters from the townspeople coming up with theories on what they believed happened. (pages 80 -88) Do you think if the investigators had of followed some of those leads they would have caught the killers faster? Do you think the opinion of the Clutters changed the more these rumors and theories spread? (Think about the nature of the rumors and the previous opinion of the family)
“PERSONS UNKNOWN” The killers, thus far, have successfully evaded capture. How have they been so successful?
WHAT MAKES A KILLER There are many different reasons why people murder. Capote does a wonderful job painting an image of the types of people that Perry and Dick were. Using the information we found on common traits of murderers, discuss in your groups which characteristics you think fit Perry and Dick’s personalities. Find quotes to support your reasoning.
