In class SAQ (Medium) • For your next assessment, you will complete an SAQ in 20 mins, in examinations conditions in class • One SAQ will be selected from two, so you need to be well prepared to answer these questions. • You should make plans for these questions – work together in groups & be ready to present your plan to the class. • Make sure you ANSWER the question, refer back to it throughout your answer, and make sure everything your write RELATES TO THE QUESTION • The assessment will take place on Monday 4 th April

[8 marks] COMMAND TERM: • Use Kandel, and the amnesia case studies- HM, Clive Wearing - make sure you make specific reference to the brain structures involved (Amydala, Hippocampus, frontal cortex) and the structure of LTM, you can also include info on serotonin and memory • Make sure you are specifically connecting back to the question being asked, - e. g. • ‘because there are limitations to the case study method, it is difficult to come to concrete conclusions about the relationship between brain damage (biological factors) and memory) • MAKE SURE YOU REFER BACK TO THE QUESTION THROUGHOUT YOUR ANSWER

[8 marks] COMMAND TERM: • i. e. describe how cultural factors affect memory • This is a ‘describe’ command term, so you should be giving detail about the aims, procedures and findings and conclusions of the studies in order to answer the question • To answer this you should give a detailed account of the research conducted by Cole and Scribner (1974) into the influence of schooling on memory with Liberian children, and Rogoff and Waddel (1982) research with Mayan children. You could also mention that Bartlett (1932) gives some insight into how culture influences the reconstructive nature of memory. The difficulties faced by cross cultural researchers are also relevant here.
