IMPULSIVE VS REFLECTIVE ACTIONS
Actions can be Impulsive Reflective Impulsive means acting very quickly, often without thinking Reflective means actions done upon thinking first
Acts can be Impulsive and do good Example: A 3 year old boy is in danger of drowning. You quickly jump into the sea to help him. In this case, there was no time for thinking because if you take long the boy might drown. You had to act fast, even though you might put yourself in danger.
Acts of can be Impulsive and do harm Example: I see my friend on the other side of the street. I cross the street without seeing if any cars are coming my way. In this case, you acted without thinking first. You have put yourself in danger without the need to. By this impulsive behaviour you could have hurt yourself.
Acts can be Reflective Example: You have a Math test tomorrow. Your best friend invites you to his house to play. You think about it and does not accept to go to his house. You decide to study instead. In this case, you thought about what is the best thing to do before accepting or not your friend’s invitation. You thought it is best to study and you’re right!
PHYSICAL AND MORAL COURAGE CAN BE OF BOTH KINDS: IMPULSIVE AND REFLECTIVE
It requires courage to put oneself at risk through impulsive action to help others – it requires that one cares for others more than for one’s safety. Example of helping the boy in danger of drowning. Reflective courage is the willingness to do what is right because you care to do what is right, even if the others are not doing so. Example of the boy choosing to study instead of going to his friend’s.
