Improvising the Webcast web site http webcast cern
Improv[is]ing the Webcast web site http: //webcast. cern. ch
The old site was there for. . . • webcasting was a new and novel technology • there was a handful of recording projects, which were promoted • there were only a few lecture and seminar recordings, which available
Things change my friend. . . • webcasting is a standard internet technology among many others => no need to advertise the technology • projects are history, recording and archiving becomes part of daily routines => no need to promote the projects • there is already a massive amount of recordings and the number is growing => “searchability” is required
Some open questions • Upcoming lectures that are recorded – is there a corresponding field in Agenda system? • Indexing and searching – based on library database – by using the search interface of CERN library? – What about the old (already stored) lectures?
Some open questions • Storing the information – The basic information (lecturer, abstract, date/time etc. ) will be stored in the library database – However, there are different techniques to implement the link to web lecture => need for more comprehensive lecture metadata? – Notice: a lecture can be stored in different formats and in different servers.
Some open questions • Linking library data records to web lectures A. Static links to material (video, slides, syncomatic lecture etc) are stored in the library data records when this material is available B. There will be a link ”Link to material” in the library data record. The Link Manager will take control of linking library data records to the material. · If the Link Manager solution will be used, what is the role of webcast server. Should it be able to respond what is available for a certain Talk Number?
Some open questions • How to implement the new directory hierarchy (talk number, i. e. a 01001 s 2 t 1) webcast. cern. ch/archive/a 01001 s 2 t 1 webcast. cern. ch/archive/2001/acad/a 01001 s 2 t 1 • What is file/directory layout like in each lecture directory webcast. cern. ch/archive/a 01001 s 2 t 1/realvideo webcast. cern. ch/archive/a 01001 s 2 t 1/slidematerial webcast. cern. ch/archive/a 01001 s 2 t 1/syncomat webcast. cern. ch/archive/a 01001 s 2 t 1/mpeg 2
Some open questions • What about the lectures that are mirrored to servers outside of CERN? (Example: Videotapes, Computing and Computers, lecture stored in wrtp-format in FUNET, Finland) 32. Advances in high speed communications on and off the Internet : videotapes: lectures, CERN, Geneva, 11 - 15 May 1998 / Carpenter, Brian E ; - Geneva : CERN , 1998. - 2 videotapes. - CERN-VIDEO-C-389 A ; CERN-VIDEO-C-389 C ; CERNVIDEO-C-389 D ; CERN-VIDEO-C-389 E ; CERN-VIDEO-C-389 b. - (Acad. Training Lect. ; 354) ( Regular lecture programme ) Abstract - Transparencies - Welcome - Detailed record - Mark record • How to maintain the old links? In this example the link is not the right one: Welcome => http: //wwwcs. cern. ch/wwwcs/public/projects/en_wu/transmissions/past_recorded_trans missions. html#1997
That’s all folks.
