Improving Planning & Pedagogy: The Gradual Release Model of Responsibility Wrap-Up The Cycle: Final Session P. S. 360 2016 -17

Purpose of Today’s Session The purpose of today’s session is to share the work we accomplished during teacher team meetings held last week with the entire group. Earlier this week, we met to discuss the lesson that was implemented on the team level. We made an attempt to increase the emphasis on analysis of student work within these teacher team discussions. What is the work telling us? We still continued to share notes from inter-visitation and analyze the effectiveness of the gradual release model, as well as use the Danielson Framework as a tool for norming the conversation around best practice. We then recorded our notes in these areas on the note-taking sheet given. Today, we will have fifteen minutes to create a visual to share our analysis and next steps. Each team will then present and listen to each grade team present and discuss commonalities at the conclusion of today’s session.

Today’s Objective Implication / Objective in Planning & Practice (today’s PD) -To share our analysis of the lesson and its delivery in terms of the gradual release theory and Danielson components. -To deliver content and/or model skills explicitly during the “teach” component of the mini-lesson and then gradually release support throughout the remainder of the lesson. -To identify instructional areas of strength and areas for growth and plan next steps accordingly as a team. -To build focus and enhance productivity at teacher team meetings. -To build collaboration among teams on a horizontal level. -To enhance student learning using the Danielson Framework for Teaching as a tool for professional growth. -To reflect upon this cycle of PD and the process of lesson -To become more reflective about our practice, not as study/inter-visitation.

Team Discussion for Lesson Study Following Inter-visitation Data Points Student work (assessment product from lesson) • • Low inference observation notes from inter-visitation Draw conclusions about what the work is telling us (i. e. , What are the student’s next steps? ) Discuss what we saw when we visited one another Think about how we can change instruction in the planning stages to improve student outcomes (i. e. , scaffolds, challenges, visuals, questions) Identify areas of strength, areas for growth, 1 next step, & develop action plan

Using the Danielson Framework for Teaching as a Tool for Professional Growth • Tool

Using the Danielson Framework for Teaching as a Tool for Professional Growth • Tool that provides us with a common language for talking about instruction • Divides quality teaching into four important areas: planning, classroom environment, delivery of instruction, & professionalism • Can use as a guide when we talk about effective teaching & student learning *However, be careful not to focus your conversation on evaluating each other’s practice using Danielson. You want to make connections to Danielson because the tool does provide us with useful information about what makes good teaching and consequentially what helps students learn best, but think of it as a part of the conversation.

Closure v Did you notice any trends among areas of strength and areas for growth among the various teacher teams? Was there a link to the P. D. ? v How did looking at student work impact your findings? v How was lesson study & inter-visitation beneficial to your professional growth? v What work do you think we need to do as a school in order to make teacher team meetings more productive? v NYC has put a huge emphasis on work that is done on the team level. Why do you think there is such a big emphasis on the work that teacher teams do?
