Improvements of Dictionaries – Suggestions by Evroterm Miran Željko Government of the Republic of Slovenia Translation division

Current situation The majority of (lexicographical) resources currently available are of little use to translators and therefore many are obliged to resort to the creation of their own terminological resources. (Isabel Durán Muñoz, e. Lexicography in the 21 st century, October 2009)

Technical translators • • experts in one or two fields have to translate texts from other fields new terms time pressure

Databases Evroterminology database Evrokorpus corpus EUR-Lex full text

Similar projects (ex-YU territory) • • Macedonia: http: //tcu. sep. gov. mk/eutc/ Montenegro: http: //www. eiprevod. gov. me/ Serbia: http: //evrotermis. anyterm. info/ Bi. H: in the future

Conclusions (I. Durán) • Translators undoubtedly need: – linguistic information (definitions, equivalents, collocations, context, acronyms, etc. ) – Pragmatic information (cultural differences, tips of use, domain specification, etc. ) • The rest is desirable but not essential (semantic information). • Easy and quick access to online resources. • Time-consuming checking many different resources. • Good and concrete definitions.
