Important Vocabulary Words for Mixtures and Solutions

Solubility We say a substance dissolves if it spreads apart when added to a solvent (like water) so we can’t crystals/grains anymore Dissolving is a complex physical and chemical process! The substance is still there! We just can’t see it because it has spread apart. Question: How is dissolving different from melting?

Solubility A substance is soluble if it dissolves in water. Example: We observed in class that table salt (sodium chloride) is soluble in water. After adding it to water, it spreads apart so we can no longer see it!

Insoluble A substance is insoluble if it will NOT dissolve in water. Example: We observed in class that zinc oxide is insoluble in water. After adding it to water, we can still see the zinc oxide. . . it doesn’t “go” anywhere!

Solutions A solvent is the “larger part” of a solution. Usually, the solvent is a liquid. = + SOLUTE SOLVENT SOLUTION
