IMPORTANT MUSLIM DATES TIMELINE Muhammad receives first revelation at Mt. In 610 CE, Muhammad receives his first revelation at Mt. Hira Significance: If Muhammad didn’t receive this first revelation, he wouldn’t have preached in the streets of Mecca; the Muslim religion may not have even existed.
In 628 CE, Muhammad returns to Mecca Significance: Muhammad became Medina’s political and military leader. After several key victories, Mecca’s resistance crumbled. If Muhammad didn’t conquer Mecca, then Mecca wouldn’t be the Muslim capitol, and the hajj may not have taken place.
Muhammad Dies in 632 CE Significance: His death didn’t stop the spread of his faith; the end of Muhammad’s life, was the beginning of the Islam faith.
19 years after Muhammad’s death, the Qur’an was made (651 CE) Significance: The Qur’an is Islam’s holiest text; it consists of 114 chapters each made up of verses discussing the nature of Allah, creation, and the human soul. They also address moral, legal, and family issues. Muslim’s believe that it contains the true word of God, revealed to the prophet Muhammad. The Qur’an is clearly an important part of the Islam religion.
The Almoravid army invaded Ghana and captured the capitol in 1076 CE Significance: The leaders of Ghana converted to Islam, due to military conquest. Ghana never reestablished its prosperity after the Almoravids’ fierce invasion. Ghana’s fall is an example of how Muslim spread; through military conquest.
Mansa Musa’s hajj, or pilgrimage, 1324 CE Significance: Mansa Musa was a deeply devout Muslim. He made his pilgrimage in a very royal way and Arab writers at the time were astonished by his great wealth. His spending upset the economy of Egypt for years; gold lost much of its value when the supply of gold suddenly increased, causing inflation. He ruled for 25 years, bringing prosperity and stability to Mali and expanded the empire he inherited.
In 1453 CE, the Ottoman Empire Captured Constantinople Significance: The Ottoman Empire defeated Constantinople, which had a great defensive line. This shows how powerful the Muslims were.
Beginning in the 1500 s, many West Africans were taken to America as slaves Significance: The traditions the West Africans brought with them took root wherever they went. Their culture has spread to Europe, America, and around the world. The Islam faith was spreading faster than before.
