Lessons for Today 1900 2016 Jehovah is the God who is powerful enough to do whatever it takes to accomplish His purpose. HE IS IN CONTROL OF EVERYTHING Therefore we should never doubt that God will be able to accomplish what He has said He will do. 16

• In the first 3 chapters of Daniel we saw the answer to Nebuchadnezzar’s dream • He learned that Jehovah is the Most High God • He learned that Jehovah rules in the afairs of men • He came close to a true belief in Jehovah • He was able to conquer Judah only because God allowed him to do so • God set him on the throne and God can take him off the throne • Nebuchadnezzar was brought to appreciate Jehovah as the One True God 20

It’s height reached the heavens; it’s leaves were lovely and fruit abundant; food for all the animals; shelter for the animals. Ø You saw the holy one coming down from heaven… “chop down the tree and cut off its branches, strip off its leaves and scatter it’s fruit” Ø Leave the stump and roots in the earth, bind with a band of iron and bronze. C. and was followed by his infant son, Labashi-Marduk. The infant was slain by conspirators who placed one of their own upon the throne – Nabonidus (556 -539 B. C. ) 27

The rise of Persia • Cyrus rose to power in the small kingdom of Persia in 559 B. C. • At this time, Persia was under the control of the growing might of the Median Empire. 29

The rise of Persia • Nabonidus (Babylon) made an alliance with Cyrus to counter the Median threat. He took Tema in northern Arabia and made it a second capital, in addition to Babylon. • There is some belief that Nabonidus favored the moon-god Sin over the god of Babylon, Marduk. Nabonidus failed to attend annual ceremonies in Babylon to pledge his subjection to Marduk. This was something only the king could do, but 31
The rise of Persia • In 550 B. C. , the Median and Persian armies met in battle. Cyrus conquered the Median army and made himself monarch of the empire which he named Medo. Persian. • Nabonidus quickly sought alliances with Lydia and with the Egyptians but to no avail. • In 546 B. C. , Cyrus added the kingdom of Lydia to his empire. • In 539 B. C. , he then turns his attention to Babylon. 32
