- Slides: 25
Important Dates • Projects Due • Research = Tuesday 12/11 • Project = Tuesday 12/13 • Unit Test – Monday 12/16
Activator Write and answer the question in your notes section: • The two rows on the most bottom part of the periodic table have been “pulled out: of order. • Why are these rows pulled out of the main periodic table?
SPS 4: Students will investigate the arrangement of the Periodic Table b. Use the periodic table to predict the above properties for representative elements EQ: What are the representative elements and their location on the periodic table?
Metals, Nonmetals, Metalloids • Metals - conductors of electricity, luster, malleable, reactive, solids • Nonmetals - not conductors of electricity, reactive & non-reactive, gases, liquids and solids • Metalloids - semiconductors, solids
8 types of Representative Elements • Alkali metals • Alkaline Earth Metals • Transition Metals • Metalloids • Halogens • Nobel Gases • Lanthanide/Actinides • Synthetics
Alkali Metals • Group 1 Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr • Highly reactive with water, can burn in air • Soft, shiny gray • True metals
Alkaline Earth Metals • Group 2 Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra • Harder, denser, stronger than alkali metals • True metals
Transition metals • Found in middle of chart • Familiar metals; not as reactive as true metals • Groups 3 to 12
Metalloids • Have properties of metals and nonmetals • Found along “stair-steps” • Aka: semiconductors, semimetals. • Used in computer chips, can “print” electric circuits • Ex: silicon
Halogens • Found in group 17 F, Cl, Br, I, At • Gases (Br liquid) and highly reactive • Like to react with metals from groups 1 & 2
Nobel Gases • Group 18 He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn • Inert gases - aren’t reactive with other elements
Lanthanides and Actinides • Found “pulled” out on the periodic chart • Used in TV, computers • Radioactive and used in nuclear energy plants and for bombs
Synthetic Elements • Produced in laboratory • Technetium and Promethium • Used in “xray” machines
Summarizer • Use your foldable to answer the questions on the handout. • Answer on a separate piece of paper. • PUT IN TOD BOX as you leave. • !
