Literacy Intervention Project • Partnership between SPDG and the Arkansas Department of Education • Project began in November 2011 and involved a blue ribbon committee made up of literacy experts from across the state • Charged with the development of a new K-12 literacy intervention tool tied to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) • The mission was to create a research-based intervention tool to be used by educational professionals working with struggling students and students with disabilities that will enhance, enrich and extend learning opportunities in the area of literacy 6

During this phase the committee focused on determining what students need to “know”, “understand” and “do” to be proficient in each K-12 English Language Arts CCSS. Phase Two • Writing literacy intervention lessons that address the essential knowledge and pre-requisite skills struggling students and student with disabilities need in order to participate in grade level standards. 7

Math Intervention Project • Partnership between SPDG and the Arkansas Department of Education • Project began in November 2009 and involved a blue ribbon committee made up of math experts from across the state • Mission was to create a resource to help education professionals narrow the mathematics achievement gap between students with disabilities and general education students. • Developed a free online tool. – Math Interventions Matrix - www. mathinterventions. org 9

Math Interventions Matrix • Consists of over 130 K – 12 explicit math interventions • Identifies the critical math skills and concepts that students need to learn and master at particular grade levels relative to the CCSS for Mathematics • Includes assessment tools to identify, pre-assess and formally assess the skill gaps of struggling learners. • Is based on research findings for teaching students with disabilities and other struggling learners • Interventions are written so they may be implemented by a wide variety of professionals or paraprofessionals 10
