JUMPSTART YOUR INITIATIVE in 6 MINS This wasn't about one answer but a process in solving a problem. Maybe we have to think about how many standards we have. We need to look at our assessments and re-teaching. The power of feedback as students grow towards mastery…WOW It's interesting that children this young can understand how multiple opportunities mean better outcomes for kids, but not all teachers get it. Child standards need to be very specific. The idea is that the smaller pieces make up the whole.

Before the “selection process” • Review curriculum alignment across all subjects and grade levels – which subjects haven’t been reviewed, recent purchases, expected new purchases. • Gather your resources –International Baccalaureate, Common Core, State Standards, Existing Standards, District Alike Standards**. • Create new forms of assessments - the better assessments align with your curriculum and allow many of your standards to associated to them and/or assignments. • How much time does this take? ? – My recommendation is 6 -24 months! Skipping these steps will result in at best - continuous revisions and most often FAILURE! #1 VIP
What does FINAL mean in your district? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Convert WORD to EXCEL Complete Excel Import Template (14 columns? ) IMPORT (PS creates 2 extra fields upon importing) Create/Contract your Standard Based Report Card CHANGES (If you build it, they will come!) Can’t use new excel, must export to get these 2 new fields (Standard ID and Longitudinal ID) 7. RE-IMPORT/Update 8. Possibly change the Standard Based Report Cards “FINAL” should mean: NO FURTHER CHANGES for 1 YEAR
Selecting Your NEW Standards • Grade level teacher Team* - Pilot concerns • Set guidelines - # of standards per content area per grade level including Life Skills (or) • Different Student Groups _ GIFTED, Special Education, ELL • Benchmark Dates – 1 st Draft per content area • Compare Standards # by Content by Grade Level • SET/KEEP* FINAL Date– No more changes after… Pre. SOME OR ALL of these ELA Standards 2 3 5 6 How many will you have?
? Related Subjects/Specials ? What I have seen and continue to see… 1. More focus on ELA – MA – BEHAVIORAL – SCI – SOC 2. Participation grades 3. General standards – not grade specific 4. Specialist Rosters – Entire Elementary Schools # of students 5. Specialist – Masters of the Fill Down 6. Very few clients ask for Specialist Comments 7. New Treads: • 3 -5 total standards for all specials • Academic Performance per content area not grade level • Behavior Standards ( eliminates the need for a comment) • BS standards - same of all related subjects, selected from those for core academic subjects
Social Media and Culling Standards Too many standards may impacts several things. . Techniques for culling the standards by selecting those quality of the assessments 1. that can better be tied to assignments & assessments 2. that better relate to your curriculum grades without sufficient evidence quality of the comments 3. that better relate to what students need to know & demonstrate MORE IS LESS IS BETTER

Definition of Wordsmith A person who works with words; especially a skillful writer. Some state and common core standards are well over 400 characters in length. . the NAME of a standards must be shortened. It’s extraordinarily difficult to shorten standards that a committee has worked to select, finding additional time to now shorten them! Wordsmithing Services are on the rise! DO YOUR PARENTS UNDERSTAND YOUR STANDARDS?
OPTIONS – if you must show teachers these identifiers #2 – Included the identifier BEFORE the shortened standard name**. These numbers count against your 65/70/75 character count of the standard name. 1. C&G. 1. 1 Explain why rules are needed in the home, school and community. – 73 total 1. C 7 G. 1. 1 = 10 characters leaving only 55 characters for the name of the standard for the printable quarters limit ** This would allow tech side staff to use a simpler identifier schema- making the report card RI. LA. 4. a creation a bit easier!
PS 12. 1 – STATE IDENTIFIERS CAN BE USED NC. RI. 2. b – Read on-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
ASK ABOUT • • CHANGES in April LAST Month of School BEFORE EOY SAVE all emails I FORGOT TO RETIRE THE OLD STANDARDS BEFORE EOY NOW I CAN’T USE THE SAME IDENTIFIERS!! DO I HAVE TO CHANGE ALL MY REPORT CARDS?
STANDARDS TIMELINE Create the standards collaboratively- Excel • IF YOU CHANGE STANDARDS DURING THE YEAR, YOU MAY NEED A NEW IDENTIFIER SCHEMA!!! • Teacher Involvement = Ownership BUT PROVIDE GUIDANCE (CHART!) • Provide ample time for feedback and finalizing list - LESS IS MORE! • Less is more- 65*-75 character limit (my recommendation-printed SBRC) • NOT ASSESSED THIS TERM – Blank , N/A or Gray Boxes • Changes and Real Estate – Text vs. # • Gradescale. Item. Dcid and Conversion. Scales for PTP • Do all teachers have rosters in PS? • Pilots can pose some issues - Invite participation from non pilot schools • FINAL VERSION – save that email!

Decisions before creating XLS Import Template 1) To Roll-up or Not 2) List. Parent. Identifier is the KEY 3) Selecting Auto-Calculate Is essential (Teacher or District)
CREATING AN EXCEL IMPORT FILE DNU If you have multiple elementary school, let hope they all use the same course #, if NOT – comma separated list 808, 608, 708
Standard Comments on the Excel SS 1 0 0 1 1 1 Rather than allowing a standard to also have a comment, I recommend a standard that’s called Teacher Comment (WH. X. 50) and also set maximum character count.
Standard Comments in the PTP
CREATING AN EXCEL IMPORT FILE What does Year. ID 25 mean? When do you use current Year. ID or the next? If you are NOT using PTG, you need only have a single active value for all standards

Standards have to be managed YEAR TO YEAR/EOY or. . . 1. MUST SET UP AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL 2017 - 2018 2. YOU MUST THEN BE IN CURRENT YEAR 3. CREATE STANDARDS LIST for Year. ID 29 Create Next Year’s List of Standards Prior to End-of-Year √ 24, 012 standards were created for 2019 -2020 COPIES ALL CURRENT YEAR STANDARDS – ACTIVE AND INACTIVE EOY PROCESS WILL NOT COPY OVER STANDARDS IF YOU DO THIS IN ADVANCE! IF YOU CHANGE STANDARDS AFTER CREATING…. ? ?
