India • Considered “jewel in the crown” – Resources and population • Ruled by Great Britain through the British East India Company – Used Sepoys – Indian soldiers to protect their interest • Sepoy Mutiny – Rumor that bullets greased with cow and pig fat – Against religion – British crushed the rebellion
India • British took complete control after the rebellion • Ruled with direct control – Brought order and stability to area, education, and infrastructure – Negatives – famines, local Indian businesses collapse, – Led to Indian Nationalism movement – wanting independence from British control
China Wow – A Rough Time
China • Isolated country – Only allowed one port open for trade • Great Britain - wants more – Created an unfavorable balance of trade because China made more money • Enter the largest Drug Lord Ever – Queen Victoria
Opium Trade and War • Britain begins to trade Opium – Addictive drug – Chinese become addicted and pay big money for drug • Opium War Begins – Chinese government tells Britain to stop selling Opium and Britain refuses – Britain wins because of advanced weapons/technology
Results of Opium War • China has to open 5 more ports for trading • Many Chinese not happy with outcome of the war
Taiping Rebellion • Peasant revolt against the outcome of the Opium War and the lack of equality for peasants • Rebellion put down by European Nations • Forced China to open up even more ports for trading purposes
Spheres of Influence • European countries saw how weak China was becoming • Grabbed land created spheres of influences
Boxer Rebellion • Chinese Secret Society that wants to get rid of foreign powers and influence in China form a rebellion • Put down by US and Europe
Open Door Policy • US issued the idea of the Open Door Policy – Leave China open to trade with all nations instead of taking parts of China • This will benefit all countries except for China – Does led to Nationalist feelings also wanting to advance their country and get rid of foreign powers
