Kinley wanted to “civilize” the Philippines and turned it into an American colony. This conveniently stopped the Japanese from controlling it and gave the U. S. a major trading port in Asia.

U. S. also claims Cuba and Puerto Rico.

IMPERIALISM IN ASIA & PACIFIC TRANSITION OF HAWAII & THE PHILIPPINES • In 1899, Aguinaldo rose up against the American occupation. -The United States suppressed the insurrection exiling Aguinaldo and killing 20, 000 Filipino Troops and 200, 000 -500, 000 Filipino Civilians -U. S. tried to soften its rule by introducing public works and economic development projects. -U. S. Promise Independence in 1916 which it finally gives in 1946, . (Treaty of Manila) after Japanese Occupation during WWII.
