The Subjunctive Mood There are TWO ways to express the subjunctive (past and present) El Presente * WEIRDO in the main clause Yo dudo que los chiles sean picantes. I doubt that the chilles are hot. El imperfecto * WEIRDO in the main clause Yo dudaba que los chiles fueran picantes. I doubted that the chillies were hot.
Remember the Acronym WEIRDO The imperfect subjunctive is also used in those cases in which the subjunctive is required but the verb of the main clause is in the past tense or conditional. It is important to know the expressions on your WEIRDO handout. Wish, want, emotion, impersonal expression, recommendation, doubt, denial, and ojalá
The Past Subjunctive The past subjunctive is used in the same contexts and situations as the present subjunctive, except that it generally describes actions, events, or conditions that have already happened. Mi padre dudaba que nosotros comiéramos toda la pizza. My father doubted that we ate the whole pizza. Me sorprendió que Uds. no vinieran. It surprised me that you didn’t come.
Past Subjunctive Endings Start with the preterit tense “ellos, ” form (-aron/ -ieron) and then drop the (-on): (FOR ALL THE FORMS) Ellos comieron = comier- Ellos hablaron = hablar- Ellos escribieron = escribier-
Past Subjunctive Endings Once you have dropped the “ON” from the ellos preterit tense, then you can add the following endings: AR ER/IR Yo -a -a Tú -as Él/Ella/Ud. -a -a Nosotros -amos * accent mark is added to the last vowel in the stem Ellos/Ellas/Uds. -an
Past Subjunctive Endings Start with the preterit tense “ellos, ” form then drop (-on) and the imperfect subjunctive endings: Form the past subjunctive by taking preterit tense (ellos) then drop (-on) and then adding the appropriate Imperfect subjunctive ending. For example, let's conjugate: tener We start with the preterit “ellos” form: tuvieron We drop the ”-on" ending: tuvier- We'll use the “yo" form for this example: tuviera Hablar hablaron a comer a comieron
Just in case you forgot the preterit endings (-AR) é aste ó amos aron (-er or –ir) í iste ió imos ieron
There are NO IRREGULAR VERBS other than whatever irregularities exist in the preterit form. fui vi di vine tuve hice puse estuve Estuvieron quise pude dije traje anduve conduje estuviera
Forming the Imperfect Subjunctive Start with the preterit form “ellos, ” drop (-on), and add… cantar aprender vivir cantaras cantara cantáramos cantaran aprendieras aprendiera aprendiéramos aprendieran vivieras viviera viviéramos vivieran • The yo and él forms of the imperfect subjunctive are identical. • In the nosotros form accent mark is added to the last vowel in the • stem, right before you add the ending.

Present Subjunctive If the WEIRDO in the main clause is conjugated in these tenses, use the PRESENT subjunctive. - Present - Future - Present Perfect - Command Main clause + que + dependent clause
Examples with the Present Subjunctive Present - Es importante que él venga Future - Será importante que él venga. Present perfect - He querido que él venga. Command - Dígale que venga. Main clause + que + dependent clause
Past Subjunctive If the WEIRDO in the main clause is conjugated in these tenses, use the PAST subjunctive. - Preterit - Imperfect - Pluperfect (past perfect) - Conditional Main clause + que + dependent clause
Examples with Past Subjunctive Preterit – Fue importante que él viniera. Imperfect – Era importante que él viniera. Pluperfect – Había recomendado que él viniera. Conditional – Sería importante que él viniera. Main clause + que + dependent clause
