Impacts of Revolution Pt 1 - Urbanization
Urbanization and development • % people living in urban settings: • 1800: 3% • 1850: 6% • 1900: 14% • 1950: 25% • 2000: 47% • 2017: over 50%
• Before revolutions – community • Foreign rule no big deal • Part of a religious or ethnic group • Industrial Rev – people migrate to cities for jobs • After revolutions country (nationalism) Nations and Nationalism
Why are more people moving to cities • After the industrial revolution there was a major shift from primary sector jobs to secondary sector jobs • Industry located primarily in cities • Services located primarily in cities • Not only have cities grown but so have the surround areas know as the MSA: Metro Statistical Area
How has this growth of cities happened? • https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=f. Kn. AJCSGSdk
Effects of political and industrial revolutions on gender roles
• Episode – “Divisions” • Chap 3
Industrialization creates opportunity • Or at least a change in venue • The daily grind vs. textile factory jobs • Middle class develops • Seneca Falls, New York 1848 – first organized expression of women’s rights • Elizabeth Cady Stanton – Declaration of Sentiments • Similar efforts began to arise in both England France • Women even began to wear pants under their skirts
Progress – 1900 • A few universities had opened up to women • Some states in USA allowed women to own and manage property • Few more jobs – nursing, social work and teaching • Nightingale – Nursing • Jane Adams – social work • New Zealand – first country to allow voting rights
The other side of the Argument • Strains of education would cause women not to be able to reproduce • Some saw suffragist like Jews and socialists • “A foreign body in our national life” • http: //historyoffeminism. com/anti-suffragette-postcards-posters-cartoons/
Non western suffrage • The idea did spread but with mixed results • Is it seen as a development from the hated west? • Ex. Katina from Java – anti arranged marriage and wanted education • HW – Read “Katina from Java” • Is there a country that you would like to know when women got the right to vote? • http: //womensuffrage. org/? page_id=69
