Ø In Diabetics atherosclerosis develop in younger age than in normal subjects. Ø Atherosclerotic changes affects the arteries in Diabetics 3 times more than those in normal subjects Ø The main predisposing factor leading to formation of Diabetic ulcer are peripheral artery disease , diabetic neuropathy , feet disfiguring. Ø 15% of those suffering with diabetes may develop Diabetic ulcer. Ø 70% of those who undergo lower limb amputation are diabetics. M. A. Kubtan 2
In Diabetics Ø Atherosclerotic features most likely developed in the arteries below the knees but the sole arteries escape from being affected by atherosclerosis. Ø Compromised blood supply to lower limbs may lead to intermittent claudication , and rest pain. Ø In Scandinavian studies : 40% of ischemic lower limb diabetics sufferers needed amputation , while only 15% of those with ischemic disease without being diabetics needed amputation. M. A. Kubtan 3
