Fotografiile sunt realizate în timpul diferitelor misiuni spațiale, de către astronauți sau sunt făcute de aparatura instalată la bordul diferiților sateliți de observație. Mai nouă pentru cei care vizualizează aceste fotografii, este tehnica de prezentare. Ele sunt fotografii compozite – rezultate din suprapunerea unui număr foarte mare de clișee, pentru că este clar că nu poate fi noapte (de exemplu) pe întreaga suprafață a unui continent.
