Image Analysis Basics
What is image analysis? Image analysis is basically when you observe an image closely and point out the message that image gives and implications of this message to the viewer. ◦ To analyze an image effectively, look at the specific details of the image and think about what statement/idea the image conveys based on these details. ◦ Since images are continuously present in our daily lives, learning how to analyze these images allows you to understand your environment and become a critic of the culture around you. ◦ Also, think about the target audience of an image. How does the image reach out to this audience?
Issue #1 What is the main message/purpose of this image? How does that message come across? What is the image’s target audience? What are the implications of this image?
What is the main message/purpose of this image? How does that message come across? What is the image’s target audience? What are the implications of this image?
Example #1 What is the main message/purpose of this image? How does that message come across? What is the image’s target audience? What are the implications of this image? ◦ How does the portrayal of this woman tie into the image’s message? What does this portrayal suggest to the viewer about the model/women in more general terms? Point to some of the details in this image, and think about what these details say about the image’s message and implications.
Example #2 What is the message of this ad? Who is the ad’s target audience? Why does this ad resonate with the viewer? How does this ad reflect a key aspect of our society?
Class Activity Get into groups of 3 -4. Use a group member’s laptop to google images from American culture (ads are especially useful here, although you’re not restricted to them). As a group, analyze this image and discuss your findings. ◦ Ask these questions: ◦ What is the image’s message? ◦ How does it communicate this message effectively? ◦ What does this image imply about its topic (for instance, if it’s making an anti-GMO statement, what does it suggest about the makeup of GMO’s)? ◦ Point out and discuss 3 or 4 details that stand out to you. How do these details emphasize the image’s message? Write down the answers to these questions as you’re answering them, then share your image and answers with the class when you’re done.
