Illinois'-National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (I-NEDSS) – The Geographic Information System (GIS) component of Analysis, Visualization, and Reporting (AVR) Prepared by E. Matt Charles, MPH I-NEDSS Statistical Coordinator matt. charles@illinois. go v 217 -785 -7165 Presented by Judy Kauerauf, MPH I-NEDSS Administrator Judy. kauerauf@illinois. gov 217 -557 -6387
Background n n n n I-NEDSS is a custom built NEDSS solution Originally deployed 2004 Developed using a modular scheme with shared general pages Complete modules for Communicable, Vaccine Preventable Diseases and Tuberculosis Includes Provider Reporting and Electronic Laboratory Reporting Sexually Transmitted Disease module in development HIV Surveillance Module/ e. HARS integration in analysis Aggregate Influenza Reporting module and features in development
Background (continued) Original AVR deployed Winter 2005 (Business Objects version 2. x) n Upgraded to version XIR 2 Summer 2007 n Allows all users of I-NEDSS full ad-hoc reporting capabilities through a drag and drop interface n
AVR Software n Business Objects XI R 2 – n n Web intelligence XI R 2 – n n user friendly reporting interface Crystal Reports XI R 2 – n n provides reporting framework (universes) A different flavor of reporting for those already familiar Webigeo – n Provides a bridge between Arc IMS and Business Objects
I-NEDSS Data Flow
AVR Security Access to the disease/condition data depends on a user’s assigned role and security permissions. n Statewide aggregates from cases available with census data n Which types of diseases or conditions? Which Jurisdiction?

AVR Use Options: n n n IDPH developed Canned Reports Ad hoc Reports Scheduled Alert Reports
IDPH Canned Reports Developed to facilitate immediate access to I-NEDSS data n Allows consistent display of commonly used information n Provides an easy to operate user interface for less experienced users n
IDPH canned reports are prompt based and easily customizable.

Ad-hoc Reporting AVR has high-level statistical functionality. n AVR allows users to develop custom reports. n AVR provides a high degree of flexibility in the display of queried information. n
Example of Ad-hoc report query building screen
Ad-hoc reports can be modified to suit the user’s needs
Scheduled Alert Reports n Reports can be scheduled to run automatically at a user’s specified frequency. Results of generated reports can be automatically e -mailed to user account. n User can specify thresholds for notification (e. g. higher than 95%CI case count results in notification). n
The GIS challenge… GIS has always been part of the project plan. n Development of an enterprise wide web-based application had always been too costly. n n n Project manager indicated that it would take 2 FTEs 2 -3 years to develop a custom solution. Development of typical ARC IMS would require development and maintenance of another entire security table.
The GIS Solution Procured a product that acts as a bi-directional bridge between ARC IMS and Business Objects. n Provides a “hand shake” between the security model developed in Business Objects and passes those roles through to the mapping application. n Allows a user to run a canned report and then spatially visualize the data very simply. n

I-NEDSS GIS Current Status Currently in test environment n Full production release in Fall 2008 (Birthday Release) n n Release will also include 2000 census data for creating rate based maps.
I-NEDSS AVR/GIS Summary Smooth integration with existing software n Utilizes a common security model n n Reducing future maintenance costs Enterprise application can be used across IDPH programmatic areas – consistent with PHIN vision of data integration. n Enables users to rapidly map cases of disease. n
