ILBC SEC 2 ENGLIS H SEMESTER 1 SYLLABUS TR. MAING
Independent Reading • All students should keep their own reading record, which should be checked twice a month by the teachers. This record should list all the books the students read at home, including title, author, date started, date finished and the number of pages. The target for Semester one is to read 10 books of an appropriate level. • Reading Journal: Total of 10 journal entries to be submitted over the course of the semester. 1 Journal Entry per 1 Book read.
Textbook (Unit 2 + 3)+ Writing (Narrative and Directed Writing) • Unit 2 (Drama Unit): June + July • Unit 3 (Detective Story Unit): August + September • Writing (Narrative Writing): June + July • Writing (Directed Writing: Informal/Formal Letter): August + September *Powerpoint Slides for each Unit and resources for each of the unit would be provided under our class Files section.
Format for Secondary Two English Exam (2020 -2021) • • • Reading (35 marks) Two passages with questions on both (25 marks) Summary of about 100 words on one of the passages (10 marks) Text Analysis (10 marks) A short passage with questions and multiple-choice questions based on the checklist: • • Theme Genre Tone Register Audience Purpose Literary devices (eg. simile, hyperbole, alliteration, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, oxymoron)
• • Grammar (10 marks) Grammar – Sharpen your skills (Textbook) Vocabulary (10 marks) - Close passage, matching, writing definitions or synonyms for the given words and multiple choice. Some words from the course book/ workbook and some unseen, general vocabulary. Directed writing (15 marks) - Using information from one of the passages from Reading section, write an informal or semi-formal letter or Speech etc. of about 150 words. Composition (20 marks) - Choose either a descriptive or a narrative essay and write about 250 words on the given topics.
