MOST verbs use part of Avere to form the passato prossimo. BUT one group of verbs use the present tense of essere instead. Here are some examples

When the passato prossimo is formed with Essere, the past participle behaves like an adjective. So, if you have a feminine subject (the “doer” of the verb), you must also have a feminine past participle. Eg è andato (masculine) BUT è andata (feminine) If the subject is plural, the past participle must also be plural. Eg Sono andati (masculine plural) Sono andate (feminine plural)
