i-helmet An intelligent and smart helmet 1 Introduction BACKGROUND This project is about encouraging a higher usage of a safety helmet among the motorcyclists. 3 Design Concept The proposed prototype are as follows : PROBLEM STATEMENT 1. Improper usage of a safety helmet. 2. more than half of the adult riders do not wear their helmets properly secured. Abuzar Ghaffari Mohd Ismail (12505) David Wong Siong Ming (12557) Farahdyana binti Muzafar (12568) Mohd Norshafizan bin Abdullah (12686) Norsharmila binti Abdul Wahab (12795) Satyasheelan Vasudevan (12841) 5 Advantage 1. Using i-Helmet might reduce the lower head and neck injury, at all level of injury severity. 2. i-Helmet can also be made useful in process of student’s identification in UTP. 3. Minimize the case of helmettheft that has been a hassle to most of the students especially the bike’s owners. OBJECTIVES 1. To yield a higher compliance rate helmet. 2. To devise an easier method for student’s identification in an institution. 3. To reduce the increasing helmet theft case. Team members ETP 33 New added features : 1. Automatic sensor that will continuously vibrate until the motorcyclist clip the helmet properly. 2. Alarm system that prevent the helmet from being stolen. 3. Barcode system to enable easier identification of students without a need to stop. 2 Methodology 4 Engineering Analysis Identifying problem Motorcyclist fatalities by part of body injured - 2002 6 Capital Cost Items Cost ______________ 1. Helmet RM 80. 00 2. Buzzer RM 8. 00 3. Electrical Component (cell, sensor, etc) RM 45. 50 4. Alarm system RM 12. 00 5. Miscellaneous RM 26. 50 ______________ Total RM 172. 00 Brainstorming ideas 7 Identifying criterion and constraint Conducting research Source : Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM, 2004) Observation on proper usage of safety helmet (n=500) Conclusion A working prototype is successfully built to demonstrate the application of smart and safety helmet. This i-helmet comes with several new features which are vibration system, alarm and also bar code. These will help to maximize the use of a normal helmet. Producing prototype Testing and data analysis Final presentation Source : (Kulanthayan et al, 2002) This product is believed to have good commercialized value for future use and to reduce the risk of motorcycle’s incident due to not wearing helmet properly.
