Edwin John Pratt The Shark by Edwin John Pratt His body was tubular And tapered And smoke-blue, And as he passed the wharf He turned, And snapped at a flat-fish That was dead and floating. And I saw the flash of a white throat, And a double row of white teeth, And eyes of metallic grey, Hard and narrow and slit. Then out of the harbour, With that three-cornered fin Shearing without a bubble the water Lithely, Leisurely, He swam—That strange fish, Tubular, tapered, smoke-blue, Part vulture, part wolf, Part neither—for his blood was cold.

I like to see it lap the Miles - (383) By Emily Dickinson I like to see it lap the Miles - And lick the Valleys up And stop to feed itself at Tanks And then - prodigious step Around a Pile of Mountains And supercilious peer In Shanties - by the sides of Roads And then a Quarry pare To fit it's sides And crawl between Complaining all the while In horrid - hooting stanza Then chase itself down Hill And neigh like Boanerges Then - prompter than a Star Stop - docile and omnipotent At it's own stable door - I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions. What ever you see I swallow immediately Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike. I am not cruel, only truthful---
