The Human Camera This indoor and outdoor exercise for two people trains confidence, empathy, intuition and trust in others. One person leads another person with closed eyes around and tells them when and what to see, smell, touch and hear. Create story for the other person’s body. Decide who is camera and decide who is camera person. The person who is the camera closes her or his eyes. And when you feel there is a good connection, you start to walk.

It is important to be close to the center of the other person –

It is important to be close to the center of the other person – ask them if you may rotate their waist shoulder, or head. Start by telling them when to open and close their eyes. Then add the senses smell, sound, touch and in the end mix them all. You can also use your voice. Listen to the Camera’s settings. Follow their flow. If you feel that something is not comfortable for them, move on. Or if you feel that they are reacting positively to something, let them stay there a bit longer. Don’t worry about creating an amazing story. Just choose normal things that you also react to. Don’t overthink it. Trust that the senses and simple things matter. After the story has been told, the roles are shifted and the other person is now lead with their eyes closed into a new space.

• First, pair into Groups of 2 • Assign one person to be the Camera • Assign one person to be the Photographer • We will take 3 photos. The Camera silently observes and is directed while the Photographer leads and directs the Camera to take the photo in the Photographers desired spot. The Camera must keep their eyes closed while they are directed. The Photographer will manipulate their Camera to see what they want them to see and tap their shoulder when they would like them to open their eyes.

Things to Say / Ask your Camera after the Photo • Describe what you see. • How did the picture you took make you feel? • What do you think this shot says about me? Photographer • listens to feedback • doesn’t talk, listens and takes notes • writes down feedback on paper to later type in the UCLAx Discussion Thread Module You will repeat this process 3 times, asking questions and taking notes after each “photo”. When you finish one round of 3 photos / feedback, switch Roles and do it again!
